EYFS
At St Mary’s C of E Primary, our EYFS Art & Design provision supports the development of children's creativity, imagination, and cultural awareness. In line with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, we recognise the importance of regular, high-quality opportunities for children to explore a wide range of materials and media. These experiences are vital in building their confidence, expressive language, fine motor skills, and understanding of the visual and performing arts.
Key Principles:
Children should be immersed in rich, varied artistic experiences.
Learning should be playful, exploratory, and hands-on.
Opportunities should be embedded across all areas of the curriculum.
Adults should model expressive language and support reflective thinking about artistic processes.
Relevant Early Learning Goals (ELGs):
ELG: Fine Motor Skills (Physical Development)
Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paintbrushes, and cutlery.
Begin to show accuracy and control when drawing.
ELG: Creating with Materials (Expressive Arts and Design)
Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools, and techniques.
Experiment with colour, design, texture, form, and function.
Share their creations and explain the processes they have used.
ELG: Being Imaginative and Expressive (Expressive Arts and Design)
Invent, adapt, and recount narratives and stories with peers and adults.
Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs.
Perform songs, rhymes, poems, and stories with others, and move in time with music when appropriate.
Our Approach in EYFS:
We provide open-ended opportunities for children to explore drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, and mixed media.
Children are encouraged to reflect on and talk about their creations.
Creative expression is valued across all areas of learning, helping children to build confidence and a sense of identity.
Regular music, storytelling, and role-play sessions further support imaginative development.
By embedding these elements into daily practice, we ensure that our youngest learners develop the foundational skills and enthusiasm that will support their artistic journey throughout their time at St Mary’s.
